Aluminum vs. MDF — What's the Difference?

Aluminum ornaments feature a crisp, vivid print on a rigid metal surface. Because aluminum is smooth and non-porous, colors appear bright and contrast is high — great for photos with bold detail or a clean background. The glossy finish on aluminum is especially reflective, so high-contrast images really pop.

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) ornaments are printed on a lightweight wood-composite material. MDF has a slightly warmer tone and a soft-gloss finish. It's an excellent choice for cozy, lifestyle-style photos or images with warm tones. MDF ornaments are lightweight and easy to hang as gift tags.

How to Frame Faces for Each Shape

• Round ornaments (2.75", 3.15") — Center the face(s) in the middle of the photo. Leave breathing room around the head; a circle crop will trim all four corners. Avoid placing faces near the edges. Group shots work best when everyone is close together.
• Rectangular/tag ornaments — Portrait-oriented photos (taller than wide) tend to fit best. Position faces in the upper-center area so the bottom of the frame can include scenery or text without cutting anyone off.
• Square ornaments (3.9" x 3.9") — Already a 1:1 ratio, so square-cropped phone photos work perfectly. Center your subject and leave a small margin on all sides.

Uploading Your Photo

• Use the upload field on this page to attach your photo at checkout. Accepted file types are JPG, PNG, and HEIC (common iPhone format).
• Choose the clearest, sharpest version of your photo — avoid screenshots of photos, as they reduce quality.
• Well-lit, in-focus images produce the best results. Natural daylight photos typically print better than dimly lit or flash-heavy shots.
• If you have multiple photos to choose from, pick the one where faces are most visible and not partially covered.

Cropping & Composition Tips

• Before uploading, crop your photo so the main subject fills most of the frame — this helps ensure nothing important gets trimmed during production.
• For round and shaped ornaments, keep faces and key details away from the very edges of the photo.
• Horizontal (landscape) photos may be cropped significantly on portrait-shaped ornaments and tags; portrait or square photos are generally safest.

Proof & Review Process

• After placing your order, I will review your uploaded photo and lay it out on your chosen ornament style.
• If I notice a potential issue with your image (blur, cropping concern, low clarity), I will reach out to you via the email on your order before proceeding.
• A digital proof is not automatically generated for every order, but I do carefully check each photo before printing.
• Please double-check your order email address so I can contact you quickly if needed.

Order Timing

• Please allow time for production after your order is placed — custom items are made to order.
• For holiday delivery, order as early as possible. I'll do my best to communicate turnaround times, but high-season demand can affect production time.
• If you have a hard deadline (such as a holiday event or gift exchange), please mention it in the order notes so I can prioritize accordingly.
